Sickle cell allele affects oxygen delivery to tissues and affects ones susceptibility to malaria. This is a pleotropic allele (affects more than one phenotypic traits). Under low CO availability, heterozygous individuals for this trait would face life 2 threatening sickle cell "Crises". Such individual remain less susceptible to malaria.
